Fire Safety - Naked Flames 

As a general rule naked flames are not to be used on Birkbeck premises. Exceptions are given to certain laboratory operations and “hot-works” being undertaken by maintenance or approved contractors where special controls (such as hot-work permits) are in force.

Candles, fireworks or barbecues are not allowed to be used on Birkbeck premises except under the controlled conditions imposed on the College’s official catering supplier.  

Anyone wishing to use naked flames, for whatever reason, may only do so with the express permission of the Health and Safety Advisor and the Maintenance Manager subject to suitable risk assessment and effective control measures being introduced to prevent both fire and the inadvertent operation of the fire detection and alarm system.
