Computer equipment

As part of your induction you will shown what computer equipment is used in your job. A colleague will show you how to access team drives, shared drives and personal folders. IT Services (ITS) will normally have set up your username and password so you can access the computer network on day one.  ITS also provide a number of support services which you should contact if you experiencing problems.


Staff are automatically registered for email once they have been established on the Human Resources database. Typically staff are entered onto this database upon receipt of the signed contract. IT Services (ITS) provides guidance on the administration of email accounts. Your School/Department Administrator should be able to assist in the first instance if you are experiencing problems establishing your email account.

Email use must be in accordance with the Birkbeck's policy on Staff Use of Electronic Mail, Internet and Telecommunication Facilities. In addition ITS provides guidelines on the responsible use of electronic mail.


You will be advised of your extension number and given an interal telephone directory which tells you how to receive, forward and pick-up calls, make external calls and set up voicemail. It also includes telephone switch facility codes. The staff directory with contact information for schools and staff is held on the staff intranet. Directory information is provided by IT Services and all enquiries should be addressed to them.
