About Birkbeck

Founded in 1823 as the Mechanic's Institution, the College was incorporated into the University of London in 1926. The Charter of Incorporation, subsequently amended in 1956, 1958 and 1973, was replaced by a new Charter in October 1993.

The Charter provides the College with its powers and establishes the structure of the College. Birkbeck has a Governing body whom appoints the chief academic and administrative officer of the College, holding the title Master of the College. A number of sub-committees exist under Governors which are responsible for the strategic management of the College.

The College itself is organised into Schools supported by Professional Services Departments.
